European Antibiotic Awareness Day - 18th November 2021

November 18th is the annual "European Antibiotic Awareness Day" which aims to raise public awareness of the threat to public health from the development of antibiotic resistance and the prudent use of antibiotics, through various campaigns and events. Recent data show that the number of patients infected with resistant bacteria is increasing across the European Union and that antibiotic resistance poses a serious threat to public health.

Traditionally, RIDACOM together with MU Plovdiv and with the support of ECDC (European Center for Disease Prevention and Control) jointly celebrate the event, but due to the epidemiological situation this year the event will not take place in person. This does not mean that the topic should be ignored, especially in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic, where the misuse of antibiotics is even more common.

Antibiotics do not directly treat viral diseases such as COVID-19 and influenza. They affect bacterial infections or prevent the development of bacteria when the body is damaged by viruses. Mild symptoms of COVID-19 and latent coronavirus infection are not indications for the need of antibiotics!
