Blood culture is an essential microbiological method for the detection and recovery of microorganisms from blood and other normally sterile body fluids. Testing blood samples for anaerobic microorganisms is particularly important in the diagnosis of bloodstream infections caused by microorganisms capable of growing under low-oxygen or oxygen-free conditions.
Lytic Anaerobic Culture Bottle is an in vitro diagnostic medical device designed for the qualitative recovery and detection of anaerobic and facultatively anaerobic microorganisms from blood and other normally sterile body fluids.
The culture bottle contains 40 mL of liquid culture medium comprising Tryptone, Yeast Extract and Saponin. The bottle contains a vacuum environment with CO₂ and nitrogen, providing suitable conditions for the cultivation of anaerobic microorganisms.
Microbial growth is detected by monitoring changes in the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) produced as a result of microbial metabolic activity. An integrated gas-permeable colorimetric sensor located at the bottom of the bottle changes colour in response to microbial growth. The change is detected by the automated system, which monitors and records the sensor readings every 10 minutes.
The culture bottle is designed for use with compatible automated blood culture and microbial detection systems. Once loaded into the system, the bottles are monitored for 5–7 days or until a positive result is detected.
